Conference presentation will focus on pre-driver interventions

TRL’s Poppy Husband is the latest confirmed speaker for the Young Driver Focus conference to be held in Swindon on 14 May.

Young driver focus is a collaborative partnership between Road Safety GB and FirstCar, supported by Arval who are providing the venue, technology and refreshments. It is free for Road Safety GB Academy members and more than 125 people have already registered to attend. The capacity is around 150 delegates.

Poppy Husband’s presentation will provide an overview of the findings of a recent evidence review and evaluation on novice drivers commissioned by the DfT.

The presentation will look at the evidence associated with pre-driver education and training – interventions for pre-17 year olds that implicitly or explicitly seek to improve safety by focusing on the attitudes or behavior of drivers and/or passengers.

Poppy will also put forward a proposal for how pre-driver education and training should be implemented around a holistic licensing system.

Poppy Husband initially started working in road safety through a two year Knowledge Transfer Partnership between Plymouth University and Devon County Council through which her role was to embed an evidence based practice culture in the road safety and travel awareness team.

Poppy is currently a psychologist with the Transport Research Laboratory where she has been involved in a variety of road safety projects for both private and public organisations.

Poppy also sits on the judging panel for the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards and advises on local, national and international government policy.

Young Driver Focus will look at “cutting young driver casualties now and in the future”. As this suggests the event will be forward-focused rather than a retrospective look at young driver collisions and casualties.

It will be held at The Arval Centre in Swindon (just off the M4) on Wednesday 14 May 2014, 10.00am – 3.30pm.

The event is FOC for Academy members and the delegate fee for other public sector attendees is just £35 plus VAT. The fee for delegates from the private sector is £100 plus VAT.
