Following a record number of entries, the shortlist for the 2017 FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards has been unveiled.
The FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards are sponsored by Road Safety Support (RSS) and will be presented at the Young Driver Focus event in London on 26 April.
Now in its third year, the awards’ scheme recognises the efforts of road safety professionals to reduce casualties among young drivers.
The 2017 awards will be presented in five categories: education and training initiative, new scheme, partnership scheme, private sector initiative and young driver campaign.
20 public and private sector organisations feature on the 2017 shortlist.
Announcing the shortlist, James Evans, founder of FirstCar, said: “With a record number of entries this year, the judging panel had a tough task in drawing up the shortlist, and I’d like to thank them all for the time and deliberations.
“We’d also like to thank everyone who took the time and trouble to submit an entry – the standard this year was really high and in many categories, the judges’ collective scores were very close.
“It’s exciting to see so much innovation from road safety practitioners across the UK, particularly when paired with robust evidence of need, behaviour change and evaluation.
“We look forward to the awards’ ceremony at Young Driver Focus on 26 April, when Med Hughes from RSS, who are sponsoring the awards again this year, will reveal the winning initiatives.”

Hi Matt, each entry submitted was scored on the set criteria by our experienced and independent judges, which is available to view at http://www.firsttimepublishing.com/awards. We are always looking to raise the bar in terms of the quality of entries and as a result a record number of entries failed to make the shortlist this year. We do appreciate your feedback and already have plans to make it even clearer to entrants for next year, in terms of what we are looking for in a winning entry.

I was really hoping that these shortlisted activities would be accompanied by a sentence that read something along the lines of:
“Results of independent/robust evaluation of [insert initiative name] show that [insert effects]…”
Maybe it has just been left out of the blurb so would be very interested if any of the schemes are able to share any evidence of effectiveness, especially those that state they can be easily replicated elsewhere. Also, would be good to know if evidence of effectiveness was considered in the shortlisting criteria?
