243 children, teachers and adjudicators took part in the annual ‘Giant Walking Bus’ record attempt at Maendy Primary School in Wales, to raise awareness of road safety.
The event, held on 15 June, which is orchestrated nationally by Brake, the road safety charity, serves as a visual reminder for motorists to slow down around schools. It also encourages participants to get out of their cars and enjoy walking to and from school and around the community.
Leading the ‘crocodile’ were junior road safety officers Josh Williams and Emma Tapp. The duo held up a large colourful banner with the slogan: ‘Slow down around schools’.
Alison Wicks, a teacher at the school and walk organiser, also led an assembly in which the dangers of walking while texting and the journey to senior school for the year 6 leavers, were among the topics discussed.
She said: “The Giant Walking Bus fulfils many curriculum requirements and also helps towards our Eco-School submission. Best of all we’ve all had a lovely morning.”
Penny Thorpe, principal RSO with Capita Symonds, said: “I was one of the adjudicators and went on the walk with the pupils. I was very impressed by their interest and how well they behaved on the walk, especially the older children who took responsibility for younger pupils and talked about some of the visible road safety issues as they walked.”
