JRSO role expanded in Cheshire

Cheshire West and Chester’s road safety officers and Cheshire Police have expanded the junior road safety officer role (JRSO) in primary schools across the Borough.

The JRSO scheme, which has been running in west Cheshire for around 30 years, now includes promoting community safety and personal safety messages and the new element of ‘watch officer’.

Each school has been invited to nominate two pupils as junior road safety and watch officers (JRS&WO) for this school year, with a 98% take up to date. JRS&WOs communicate monthly messages about road safety, community safety and personal safety and organise competitions for all the pupils in their school.

At the end of their year in office the JRS&WOs can enter an award to select who has made the biggest impact in promoting safety messages to their school and local community.

Councillor Lynn Riley, the council’s executive member for community and environment, said: “This new way of delivering practical and fun ways for our children to stay safe at school, at home and at play builds on the success of the junior road safety scheme. This time it is bigger and better than ever and it’s great to see the enthusiasm and commitment that the children bring to the programme, as well as a range of new ideas of their own.”

Lue Ellis, RSO for Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “We are delighted to have joined forces with Cheshire Police this year.

“We will be bringing a new dimension to the programme with new topics and new faces in the form of our community safety wardens and PCSOs to make sure everyone stays and feels safe where they live.”
