Boxing trainer Enzo Calzaghe is backing a new campaign which urges motorists in Wales to always wear their seatbelts.
The ‘Options Seatbelt’ campaign is being run as a joint partnership between South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Gwent and South Wales Police Forces, Capita Symonds, and local authority road safety officers.
The first two weeks of the campaign, launched 1 February, focused on education and publicity. The enforcement side of the campaign commenced on 14 February and will last until 28 February.
As part of the education phase drivers and passengers found not wearing a seatbelt were offered the chance to attend an awareness raising event as an alternative to prosecution. The event consists of a presentation delivered by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service about the potential dangers of not wearing a seatbelt.
Enzo Calzaghe said: “I am extremely pleased to be supporting this campaign. Wearing your seatbelt really can save your life if you are involved in a road traffic collision.”
Neil Brown, head of road safety for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We are delighted that Enzo Calzaghe is supporting this important initiative. If this campaign can get more people to wear their seatbelts whilst travelling then we will see less serious injuries and deaths on our roads.”
