Ian Kerr has been awarded an MBE for his lengthy career dedicated to improving the safety of motorcyclists.

Ian has spent much of both his working life and private life promoting safe responsible motorcycling.

He joined the Met Police straight from school and within three years became a traffic patrol officer. He then won a place on the Met’s competition motorcycle team and represented the British police in European competitions.

Ian then set up a one-day rider training scheme aimed at helping everyday riders understand the police rider training system; over time this became the current ‘Bikesafe’ scheme.

Ian also became involved with motorcycle crash investigation and liaising with manufacturers to help improve motorcycle safety and engineering. He often appeared at the Old Bailey as an expert witness on motorcycle matters.

Now retired from the police service, Ian is currently involved in testing and helping to improve the safety of police motorcycles. He also works for four charities – including the Association of Industrial Road Safety Officers (AIRSO) – as a motorcycle consultant.

Ian has written for every UK motorcycle magazine and many more around the world, and written many books – all the time promoting safety along with the pleasure of motorcycling.
