Having chalked up a remarkable 42 years’ service, Sandy Flamson from Whitwick in Leicestershire has been named longest serving school crossing patrol (SCP) in the Road Safety GB East Midlands Region.

Sandy’s dedicated service has been recognised in a competition run by the SCP uniform supplier Keltic Clothing which is designed to reward SCPs for their commitment.

Under the competition, the longest-serving SCP in each Road Safety GB region is receiving a bottle of champagne and long-service badge, and each member of the local team is treated to either a STOP cupcake or gingerbread patrol.

Sandy started as a patrol in January 1973 and has certainly seen some changes since then. The uniform and sign have changed to meet modern standards, and patrols can now stop traffic to cross any pedestrian, adult or child. In many ways, however, the role is the same today as it was 42 years ago.

Sandy said: “I love my job because I’m helping children to be safe and I feel like I’m making a worthwhile contribution to the community.

“I enjoy being out in the fresh air, meeting new people and watching the children grow up. In some cases I’m now crossing their children!”

Laura Mellett, account supervisor at Keltic Clothing, said: “It’s such a fantastic achievement. We’re happy to be involved and to see someone get recognised for making such a big contribution.

“We hope that, in a small way, our competition is giving some well-deserved recognition to what we consider to be an integral part of road safety, as well as a great British heritage."
