A one-day conference being held next month will examine how the UK can maintain its position towards the forefront of the autonomous vehicle industry.

The Driverless Technology Conference (DTC), staged in Milton Keynes on 22 November, will see industry ‘insiders’ offer a glimpse of what the future may hold for the technology.

Now in its second year, the event is supported by a number of organisations including media partner Road Safety GB.

The technological capabilities of self-driving cars are expanding rapidly. Last week, a driverless car was tested on the streets of the UK for the first time, in what was described as a ‘major milestone’ in the development of the technology. And earlier this month, the Government announced that the Modern Transport Bill will be published early next year to help Britain become a world-leader in the field.

The Driverless Technology Conference will address the use of the technology in real-world environments and provide a strategic overview of the development needed to enable the technology to flourish in the UK.

The 2016 event will feature two conference streams: ‘Policy’ and ‘Technical’.

The Technical Stream will provide a platform to discuss the latest developments within autonomous control systems, including: connectivity, communication and 5G, advanced roadmapping, collision avoidance systems, sensors and future innovation.

The Policy Stream will address areas such as: regulatory roadmaps, policy frameworks, cybersecurity, public opinion and consumer acceptance, planning, infrastructure, mobility, insurance, liability and legal challenges.

Speakers across both streams will come from a wide range of organisations including Jaguar Land Rover, TomTom Automotive, Atkins, TRL and Thatcham Research.

Iain Temperton, Road Safety GB’s director of communications, said: "Autonomous vehicles are a hot topic among road safety professionals, with very divided opinions as to whether they will be good or bad for road safety.

“The Driverless Technology Conference will shed more light on this fascinating topic and may help dispel some of the myths about safety, which is why Road Safety GB is very happy be a media partner and to help promote the conference.”
