New course upgrades child seat advice

More than 50 advisors are now qualified across the UK to provide better information and advice to the public about child car seats, as part of a new course created by Child Seat Safety Ltd.

The new course, accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), was set up in December 2011 and assists anyone who provides advice to the public, or transports children as part of their day-to-day work.

David Evans, senior researcher for Which? consumer magazine, and one of the first 50 to complete the qualification, said: “Given that in excess of 70% of child car seats are incorrectly installed and that this is at least in part due to the poor quality of advice we’ve found in major retailers, there has long been a need for a formally accredited training scheme.

“Unlike manufacturer training which focuses on particular brand or model features, this course explores the generic safety issues associated with all seats and how they interact with all types of car to provide effective crash protection.”

Julie Dagnall, co-founder of Child Seat Safety, said: “We are really pleased to announce that the qualification is being well received and that the first 50 advisors have successfully completed the course and final assessment.

“These individuals are just the start of many professionals who are taking the opportunity to get the correct training, and we are looking forward to delivering the course to more in the future.

“Our evaluation from the courses is really positive and we have seen a wide range of knowledge from delegates with many years’ experience undertake the IOSH qualification.”
