GEM Motoring Assist has welcomed news that the Highway Code will be updated later this year to help road users better understand how motorways and major A-roads operate.
The new guidance has been provided by Highways England as part of its commitment to improve safety across England’s major routes.
Among the updates is clearer advice on how and where to stop in an emergency, including the importance of not driving in a lane that has been closed with a Red X sign displayed.
There is new guidance on the use of variable speed limits to manage congestion and information on how safety cameras are used to ensure compliance with speed limits and lanes closed with a Red X, including the hard shoulder.
In total, 33 existing rules will be amended and two new rules will be introduced.
GEM Motoring Assist has described the changes as ‘long overdue’ – adding that it is keen for drivers to understand where the risks can be particularly high on motorways.
Neil Worth, GEM chief executive, said: “Traffic management procedures – including use of the hard shoulder for traffic – have been in use since 2006.
“So we welcome the announcement that more detailed and specific advice is to be included in the Highway Code, as we know this has the potential to assist every road user in reducing the risks they face – and the risks they may pose to others – on a motorway journey.
“We urge drivers and riders to ensure they know the rules and signs relating to smart motorways. Understanding how a smart motorway works can help ensure you don’t receive an unwanted traffic ticket.
“Knowing what to do if you are unfortunate enough to experience a breakdown in a stretch of smart motorway could well prove a lifesaver.”
