A new campaign is urging drivers and passengers in Buckinghamshire to #DoTheSmartThing and wear their seatbelt.
The campaign, which has been launched by Travel Safe Bucks, stresses that there is no excuse not to wear a seatbelt.
Travel Safe Bucks says “it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been driving, how far your journey is, or how familiar you are with your route, you always need to wear a seatbelt”.
It points to statistics which show a car occupant is twice as likely to die in a crash if they aren’t wearing a seatbelt.
The campaign also reminds drivers and passengers the offence carries an on the spot fine of £100, which could rise to £500 if prosecuted.
Rob Smith, service director for highways and transportation, Buckinghamshire Council, said: “Thankfully the majority of people wear their seat belts, but there are still some people who decide to take the risk by not wearing a seat belt, especially on short journeys.
“Research has shown that many collisions occur at low speed and within a few miles of home. So even if you’re just popping out for five minutes on a road you always use, please remember to wear a seatbelt. It could save your life.”
Travel Safe Bucks is Transport for Buckinghamshire’s road safety initiative.
