Nottinghamshire Police are encouraging people to volunteer to take part in new Community Speed Watch schemes.
Under the scheme, local residents volunteer a small amount of their time each week to monitor speeds with a hand-held speed measurement device.
Officers will follow up by sending warning letters to the registered keepers of offending vehicles, asking for their assistance in keeping speeds down in the local community and giving advice to help change their driving habits.
Persistent offenders could face further action by the police.
PCSO Peter Keeley, Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We have run these schemes successfully in the past, in response to ongoing community concerns about road safety and speeding.
“By providing training and support to community volunteers who want to set up Community Speed Watch schemes we are helping them to make a positive contribution to road safety in the areas where they live.
“It’s a great way of getting things done by working together with our communities and tackling these issues which have a negative impact on their quality of life.
“We’re now urging volunteers, who must be aged 18 or over, to get in touch if they can spare at least an hour a week to conduct speed checks and help reduce speeding vehicles on their roads.”
