NRSC session will focus on deprivation and how it links to road safety

Two experienced and accomplished speakers from Agilysis will deliver a session at NRSC 2024, looking at ‘deprivation and road safety’.

The 2024 edition of the National Road Safety Conference will be held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel on the NEC complex, on 6-7 November. The event is organised by Road Safety GB and co-sponsored by Jenoptik, Transport for West Midlands and Westcotec, with talks ongoing with two other potential sponsors.

The deprivation session, which forms part of the Mail conference programme, will include presentations by Agilysis chairman Dan Campsall and the company’s technical director, Bruce Walton.

Dan Campsall’s presentation will focus on road traffic and pedestrian injury risk in ethnic minority populations.

He will explain how postcode analysis of pedestrians involved in reported injury collisions in Great Britain was undertaken to compare the backgrounds of those injured.

The analysis revealed that deprived ethnic minority pedestrians are more than three times more likely to be a casualty on Britain’s roads than white, non-deprived pedestrians. The findings show that deprivation plays a significant role in the likelihood of a pedestrian being injured in a collision, and that being from an ethnic minority plays an additional part.

The second presentation, by Bruce Walton, will look at what we can learn about deprivation from STATS19.

Bruce will explain that there are a number of ways in which road traffic risk is experienced differently by different communities, and that deprivation appears to augment risk for certain groups of road users – including children, pedestrians and e-scooter riders.

The presentation will highlight the ways in which publicly available data helps road safety professionals understand the contribution deprivation makes to risk among road user groups and how further analysis can offer deeper insights, particularly when used with additional sources of data to explore a wider array of socio-economic factors.

The agenda for NRSC 2024 comprises a Main conference programme, Fringe programme and a series of workshops. In total, it will consist of more than 60 sessions covering a multitude of topics.

More than 150 people have already registered to attend the conference, and 22 organisations have signed up to participate in the exhibition which runs alongside it.
