RSA Insurance Group has partnered with the Met Police and Transport for London (TfL) to produce a short video which shows cyclists and HGV drivers what it’s like to be on the road from the other’s perspective.
The film, which was published to YouTube last week, was produced as part of the Met Police’s ‘Exchanging Places’ programme which helps tackle the problem of cycle accidents in London.
Under Exchanging Places, which was set up in 2007, cyclists are invited to sit in the driver’s seat of a HGV or bus to get a better understanding of what the driver can and can’t see. By doing so, the programme aims to ensure both road users understand the risks and position themselves appropriately.
Exchanging Places has been extremely successful and in September 2013 the number of people who had attended an event passed the 10,000 mark.
The video was played on a large screen at an Exchanging Places event outside Charing Cross Station on 5 December, at which more than 200 high-vis back pack covers were distributed to cyclists.
