Safe roads
The theme for the first day of the Project EDWARD Week of Action is safe roads.

‘Roads & roadsides are designed to reduce the risk of crashes and minimise their severity but it’s still everyone’s responsibility to use our roads safely.’

The RoadPeace Challenge
This week is also the RoadPeace Challenge.

The event brings together police, fire and rescue services, the NHS and other professionals who witness the ‘daily devastation’ caused by road crashes, alongside crash victims and bereaved families, to make a united stand against road harm.

Det chief supt Andy Cox, of the Metropolitan Police, who founded the RoadPeace Challenge in 2021, said: “There is a significant lack of understanding about the tragically high amount of death and life-changing injuries that occur on UK roads each and every day.

“This leads to a level of complacency, with far too many people believing it won’t happen to them. I have met so many bereaved families who live with the lifelong impact of losing a loved one – it’s heart-breaking and devastating.

“Road death is sudden, violent and affects young, old and all demographics. We all have a responsibility to drive safely, and road safety stakeholders have a duty to reduce road danger.”

Road Safety GB backing for Project EDWARD
Project EDWARD has proven extremely popular among the road safety community – and has support from a number of stakeholders, including Road Safety GB.

James Gibson, executive director of Road Safety GB, said: “Road Safety GB is pleased to support the 2023 Project EDWARD week of action.

“The event has developed substantially since its inception back in 2016, becoming a real opportunity for road safety teams across the country to showcase the great work they do all year round to reduce casualties.

“It has also been very fruitful in helping to raise awareness of key road safety issues. This year the key message is that safer mobility is everyone’s responsibility – something we can all get behind.”

UN Global Road Safety Week
The 7th UN Global Road Safety Week gets underway today, drawing attention to the ‘desperate need’ for governments and their partners to rethink – and redo – mobility.

Organised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the event aims to highlight ‘concrete and specific actions’ that can be taken by different stakeholders to promote and facilitate a shift to green and sustainable modes of transport.

This includes increasing investment in walking, cycling and public transport.
