676 pupils from schools across Gwent took part in a poetry competition to highlight the importance of in-car safety.

The annual illustrated poetry competition, jointly organised by the road safety team of Capita Symonds and Heddlu Gwent Police, was considered a resounding success.

Penny Thorpe, principle road safety officer at Capita Symonds, said: “I am delighted with the number of entries for this competition.

“Hundreds of people have thought hard about the implications and risks of car travel in order to write their poems. The end result will be safer drivers in the years to come.”

The winning entries were awarded cash prizes at a ceremony at County Hall during the start of Child Safety Week.
