Following a revamp, the Road Safety GB website received a record number of visitors, visits and page views in October 2014.

The website has had a comprehensive overhaul, one of the key features of which is a responsive design that recognizes the device the reader is using, and presents the site in the appropriate format.

During October 2014, the site received 24,739 visits, an increase of 3% compared with the previous record of 23,955 in March 2014. The number of visitors also increased, by 2% – from 16,292 in March to 16,670 in October 2014. The site also received more than 62,000 page views in October.

The most read news item during the month was the story about the new THINK! Country Roads campaign which attracted 1,098 page views and 50 reader comments in the ensuing discussion thread. This was followed by the story about the DfT consultation into its cycling delivery plan (845 views and 27 reader comments), the launch of the ‘Fatal Four website by Leicestershire Fire & Rescue (755 views and 32 reader comments), and Islington becoming the first London borough to introduce a borough-wide 20mph limit (697 views and 13 reader comments).

Other sections on the new site that are attracting considerable volumes of traffic include ‘Your local area’ (for the public) and ‘Resources & services’ (for road safety professionals).

Nick Rawlings, editor of Road Safety News, said: “We are very pleased with reaction to the new-look website.

“Technically the switch to the new site went almost without a hitch, and we have had very few adverse comments. Where possible we have taken comments on board and ‘tweaked’ the new site.

“We have the facility on the new site to publish features and opinion pieces as well as news, and would be pleased to hear from anyone with an idea or topic for a feature or opinion piece. Contributors should contact me by email in the first instance.”

I agree with Hugh, and also note that those who comment seem to be retired or independent to a disproportionate degree. Perhaps worried about writing anything on line that might be at odds with policy?

Despite the large number of views from, I presume, people connected with road safety and accident investigation/prevention, I still find it disappointing that so few have an opinion on the variety of news items, nor feel inclined to agree or disagree with what others have said. Perhaps it’s just a job for most and only a passion for a few.
