Four in 10 newly qualified young drivers surveyed as part of a report by Continental Tyres have admitted to being unsafe on the road – while 47% think that they are not being taught enough about road safety.

Thai woman takes dip in road in pothole protest
Fed up with the condition of her local roads, a Bangkok-based model has staged a pothole protest, donning a shower cap to take a ‘protest bath’ in one of the holes that she says are causing ongoing problems and accidents.

Liz McInnes receives Brake’s monthly parliamentary award
Liz McInnes, MP for Heywood and Middleton, has been given the accolade of Parliamentarian of the Month for August, by the road safety charity Brake and Direct Line Group. The award recognises Liz’s involvement in the Justice for Joseph campaign and the work she has also done supporting Brake’s Roads to Justice campaign.

Vehicle Certification Agency appoints new chief executive
Pia Wilkes has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), a role which will see her lead the agency’s work to ensure and improve the safety standards of all new vehicles on UK roads.

School banner competition aims to encourage parents to drive less
Recognition Express has launched its annual school road safety banner competition, which is this year centered around encouraging parents to drive less. Supported by Brake, the competition is for pupils aged four to 11 years and is designed to engage children about staying safe around roads and traffic.

BBC’s Inside Out to examine safety of tramlines for cyclists
The BBC’s Inside Out programme will tonight (12 September) examine the safety of tram tracks after cyclists in three UK cities (Nottingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh) were involved in a series of accidents.

IAM RoadSmart announces HQ move to Welwyn Garden City
IAM RoadSmart has announced it will be moving its head office from Chiswick to Welwyn Garden City at the end of the year. The move will be a gradual process over the coming months, with front-facing operations of the road safety charity relocating to the new site first.

New vehicle registrations continue to increase
The number of vehicles newly registered in Great Britain in the second quarter of the year (April to June 2016) exceeded 800,000 for the first time since 2003, increasing 2% from the same period in 2015.

Udate for fleet safety benchmarking tool
An online tool designed to help organisations improve work-related road safety has been updated and revised to further benefit managers and drivers. ‘Fleet Safety Benchmarking’ has been developed by eDriving, together with partners including ORSA, RoSPA, TRL and Fleet Forum and is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT).
