Agenda published ahead of next month’s National Motorcycle Safety Seminar
The agenda for the 2017 National Motorcycle Safety Seminar has been published – with places still available for delegates to register.
Organised by Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service, the one-day event takes place in Stevenage on 17 November and runs with the tagline ‘an opportunity to learn and to share best practice’.
The workshop will include presentations on the Biker Down Initiative, motorcycle safety and transport policy framework, road traffic collision analysis, understanding the rider experience and the safe system approach.

Child casualty figures show need for more road safety education – DriveSafe & StaySafe
DriveSafe & StaySafe has called for a national focus on road safety education on the back of new DfT figures which show a rise in the number of children killed on Britain’s roads.
The not-for-profit organisation behind The Conies, a family of cartoon characters that provide safety role models for children, says it is ‘shocked’ by the rise, adding that urgent action is needed.
Published on 28 Sept, the DfT figures show that the number of children (under-15 years) killed on UK roads rose to 69 in 2016, a year-on-year rise of 28% to the highest number since 2009. The DfT says the figures show ‘no clear trend’.
Fay Goodman, director of Birmingham-based DriveSafe & StaySafe, said: “This is shocking news. Contrary to the Government’s response, the annual figure for child deaths and serious injuries on the roads has been rising in recent years following 20 years of year-on-year falls since 1995.
“We urgently need to do more to keep our children safe particularly in the face of dangerous driving behavior and parking around school gates.”

Quiz tests tyre safety knowledge
Motorists are being given the chance to demonstrate their tyre safety knowledge by taking part in an online quiz.
Developed by TyreSafe as part of Tyre Safety Month, the quiz is designed to be a fun way to prove how much drivers know about tyre safety and highlight the potentially life-saving information they need to be more familiar with.
Those who complete the challenge will be ranked on a leaderboard, which not only records the correct answers but also the time in which the quiz is completed. Participants can share their score via social media links at the end.
Should they have answered incorrectly, they will be shown the correct answer – for those wanting more information, a button directs them to tyresafe.org where they can find further details on the subject.
Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, said: “TyreSafe is continually seeking ways to engage motorists in the tyre safety message and the TyreSafe Test is an accessible and fun way to do just that.
“Those who don’t score as highly as they think they should tap the ‘More Info’ button at the end and then have another try.
“We hope all enjoy learning some potentially-invaluable safety advice along the way and wish everyone luck.”
