SCPs receive safety makeover

School crossing patrols (SCPs) in Medway are sporting a brighter new uniform designed to increase their presence and safety.

The SCP service was previously managed by the council’s education department, but is now the responsibility of Medway’s road safety team. Safer journeys officers are encouraging schools and the community to actively support the patrols.

Su Ormes, principle road safety officer, said: “When a patrol displays a stop sign, motorists must stop to allow children to cross or they risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000 and three penalty points on their driving licence.

“Sadly we do receive reports of drivers not stopping and being verbally abusive towards the patrol. These ‘drive throughs’ are putting our patrols and people crossing the road in serious danger. We hope that the new uniform will help increase patrols’ presence on the road and their safety.”
