Show your support for National Road Victim Month 2024

RoadPeace is urging road safety professionals across the UK to show their support for National Road Victim Month 2024 – an annual campaign aimed at raising awareness of the number of people killed and injured on UK roads.

The campaign, which kicks off on 1 August, aims to raise awareness about the fact that:

  • Every day in the UK, five people are killed and around 80 are seriously injured, on average, in road collisions
  • Since records began in 1926, over 500,000 people have been killed in UK road crashes – far exceeding the 375,000 UK citizens killed due to warfare during the same period
  • The routine daily activity of driving results in more fatalities annually in the UK than both murder and terrorism combined
  • In 2022 alone, 1,766 people were reported killed and 141,560 people were reported injured in collisions on UK roads

National Road Victim Month, which was established in 1998 by RoadPeace, also recognises the work of the emergency services, who respond to road crashes every day, and highlights the mental and physical impact that road crashes have on them.

To facilitate widespread participation and support for National Road Victim Month, RoadPeace has made a range of resources available on their website. These resources are designed to help road safety professionals to engage with the campaign and promote its message effectively.

They include:

  • Branded graphics: ready-to-use visuals to share on social media and other platforms
  • Editable graphics: customisable templates that can be personalised with messages and branding
  • Template news release

Throughout National Road Victim Month 2024, RoadPeace will also be sharing members’ stories and amplifying their voices as part of a social media campaign. These posts will be found daily on RoadPeace social media channels during August.

Rebecca Morris, head of communications at RoadPeace, the national charity for road crash victims, said: “Every road death is a tragedy, and the impact on families, communities and emergency services is profound and lasting.

“During National Road Victim Month, we aim to not only remember those who have been needlessly killed and injured on our roads, but also to drive real change in our approach to road danger reduction in the UK to prevent future tragedies.

“Thank you to colleagues across the UK for their ongoing support and commitment to reducing road harm.”
