Social media campaign encourages drivers to belt up

Safer Roads Greater Manchester are urging drivers to remember to wear seat belts as part of a campaign aimed at saving lives on the region’s roads.

The new social media campaign, running throughout February, looks to raise awareness of the potential consequences for drivers or passengers who fail to belt up when on the move.

Safer Roads Greater Manchester said: “Wearing a seat belt could not only save you from a £500 maximum fine, but it could also save your life. In a crash, you are twice as likely to die if you aren’t wearing a belt.”

A quarter of road fatalities in the UK were not wearing seat belts during collisions, and in Greater Manchester the number is even higher at 28%.

Not wearing a seat belt is one of the ‘fatal four’ reasons for collisions and people killed on the roads, alongside speeding, drink and drug driving, and distraction from mobile phones.

The campaign has been partly funded through Road Safety GB North West to ensure its messaging can be seen by as big an audience as possible across the north west of England.
