Webinar to make attendees ‘Blue Light Aware’

07.56 | 3 June 2025 |

An online event taking place later this month will explore latest developments in the law around use of blue lights and sirens, as well share insights from emergency services professionals and road safety experts.

Organised by Project EDWARD, the webinar takes place on Tuesday 17 June (11am-12pm). Click here to register.

On the agenda will be a look at upcoming changes in legislation regarding blue light driving standards and training requirements, an exploration of the differences in rules or exemptions for different services, an understanding of the common errors made by other road users when making way for emergency vehicles and a discussion on the sanctions or penalties emergency drivers may face when things go wrong.

In addition, there will be a look at the new edition of the Roadcraft emergency driver manual, courtesy of The Stationery Office, as well as time for discussion of questions and points put to the panel by members of the webinar audience.

The webinar was inspired by the Blue Light Aware resource, produced and curated by GEM Motoring Assist.

The resource comprises a suite of videos that offer simple advice on how to stay legal and safe when making way for an emergency vehicle on a ‘blue-light’ journey. Scenarios include at junctions and roundabouts, on motorways and along roads with double white lines.

James Luckhurst, Project EDWARD founder, said: “GEM Motoring Assist’s commitment to road safety has been exemplary, and their development and ongoing promotion of the Blue Light Aware resource stands as a testament to their leadership in this field.

“By providing clear, practical guidance on how drivers should respond to approaching emergency vehicles, GEM has empowered a great many road users to make safer, more informed decisions in critical moments. The Blue Light Aware resource not only reduces confusion and risk at the roadside, but it also helps save vital seconds for emergency responders.

“GEM’s partnership with Project EDWARD reflects our shared mission to reducing harm on our roads, and we are grateful for their innovative approach and unwavering support. Their resource is a vital tool in our collaborative efforts to raise awareness, change behaviour and make our journeys safer.”
