Project EDWARD and the British Horse Society (BHS) are saddling up to raise awareness of the 2022 Highway Code changes, through a week-long ride between Lambourn and Windsor.

The ride got underway on Monday (12 May), with the team assembling before dawn on Lambourn Gallops, where they featured live on BBC Breakfast.

News correspondent Tim Muffett contributed several slots into the three-hour show, which featured Alan Hiscox from the BHS, James Luckhurst from Project EDWARD and Matthew Barber, Thames Valley police and crime commissioner.

The riders were shown setting off live on BBC1 for the first day’s ride – a relaxed 14 miles taking them east through the county of Berkshire in fabulous early summer weather.

Accompanying Alan and James was BBC presenter Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes who is making a programme about the ride and what the organisers hope to achieve.

The second day brought the team as far as Yattendon in continued sunshine. Alan Hiscox reported that there had only been one occurrence of a driver failing to slow down and pass wide. This was in Newbury and involved the driver of a motorhome.

Matthew Barber talked to James Luckhurst about road safety around horses.

The ride culminates at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, later in the week.
