Road Safety GB comment on smart motorways

Road Safety GB has issued a comment on smart motorways, following a BBC Panorama programme on the subject.

Speaking to the programme, transport secretary Grant Shapps confirmed the Government’s smart motorway review – expected imminently – would spell the end for dynamic smart motorways, where the hard shoulder is opened to traffic during busy periods, but closed at other times.

Alan Kennedy, executive director of Road Safety GB, said: “It’s important that we as a nation make advances in infrastructure and technology in an effort to cope with the ever-increasing demand in traffic.

“However, we must also ensure that those advancements do not increase risk to the people who use that infrastructure.

“Road Safety GB fully supports the Government in its drive to reduce casualties and we welcome the transport minister’s desire to review the effectiveness of smart motorways.

“We look forward to the publication in due course.”
