Joined-up approach targets those most at risk of offending

A multi-agency initiative has been launched in West Mercia to address the ‘root causes of dangerous driving’.

Funded by John Campion, West Mercia police and crime commissioner, #MORSE focuses on individuals who repeatedly commit driving offences, as well as those who are at risk of re-offending.

The aim of #MORSE is to minimise the likelihood of repeat offending, reduce the number of road deaths, and make communities ‘a safer place to be’.

The initiative is being led by YSS – a charity which supports vulnerable children, young people and adults – in partnership with West Mercia Police, Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Warwickshire & West Mercia Community Rehabilitation Company (WMCRC).

Offenders will be referred to YSS by West Mercia Police and WMCRC. The charity will then provide the most appropriate and effective support, with the help of the fire services and external agencies.

Launched in September to coincide with the official Emergency Services Day (999 Day) – more than 30 referrals have already been made, tackling issues such as speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs and dangerous driving.

John Campion said: “Too many people are losing their lives on our roads. I am committed to making the roads of West Mercia safer, which is why I am supporting #MORSE.

“This initiative will use a joined-up approach to target those most at risk of offending, and ensure they are given the right support to stop this dangerous behaviour from happening again.

“By addressing the root causes, I hope to see #MORSE reduce the number of people killed or injured on our roads, as well as cutting the number of road traffic offences.”

Catherine Kevis, YSS chief executive, said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership to deliver #MORSE throughout West Mercia.

“Statistics suggest that the value of prevention for a serious road traffic accident is £229,000, and with most accidents caused by speeding, distraction, and drink driving – behaviours that can be prevented – YSS can deploy its experience of working with people towards adopting safer behaviours.

“As a preventative service, #MORSE will provide a supportive one-to-one approach to help people take responsibility for their behaviour, understand the consequences of their actions and modify their attitude.”
