New course increases teenagers’ road awareness

A social enterprise has developed a short course to increase awareness about the consequences of illegal and risky road behaviour among teenage road users.

ASDAN, a charitable social enterprise with awarding body status, provides courses to more than 6,000 UK and international schools, colleges, youth centres and training providers.

ASDAN has developed the RoadWise Short Course in partnership with Cheshire and Warrington Connexions. Participants learn about the consequences of dangerous driving, dangers on the road, the law, transport and the environment, vehicle maintenance and vulnerable road users.

RoadWise is primarily designed for young people aged 13–16 years, and can be carried out in a variety of settings over a period of time to suit the individual or co-ordinating centre. Students have to present evidence of their RoadWise activities in a portfolio which maps their progress.

Jon Duckham, head of programmes at ASDAN, said: “We are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to reward the achievement and celebrate the success of young people.

“Our latest product – RoadWise Short Course – is used as a focus for work with young people around issues of road use.

“It is not a road safety course but a whole programme of activities designed to increase awareness about the consequences of illegal and risky behaviour associated with inappropriate use of roads and vehicles.”
