On the first anniversary of Scotland’s new lower limit an anti drink-driving design has been unveiled as the winner in South Lanarkshire’s Road Safety Calendar competition.
The annual competition encourages pupils to submit road safety related paintings, which are judged by a panel which includes South Lanarkshire’s road safety team.
The winning painting is illustrated on the road safety calendar with 10,000 copies going to schools, offices, libraries, colleges, hospitals and council buildings.
First place was taken by first year pupil Laura Johnston from Duncanrig Secondary School in East Kilbride whose design features a colourful street scene and the message, “Don’t drink and drive if you want to survive!”.
14,000 pupils from 105 schools took part in this year’s competition with a total of 3,085 designs submitted for judging. Entries are split into six categories, with judges selecting the top three in each category. A full list of the winners can be viewed here.
Laura Johnston said: “Road safety is something I feel strongly about so while it is great to have won the competition it is even better to know that my design will be carried on the calendar right through 2016 to next Christmas.
“When we were given the chance to take part in the competition I had a think about road safety issues, and drink driving seemed to me to be an important one to highlight.”
Gordon Mackay, South Lanarkshire Council’s head of road and transportation, said: “It was great to see so many entries to this year’s calendar competition and the thought and effort that goes into each and every design is apparent from the wide variety of images and messages submitted.
“Judging the competition is a really challenging task. It was a tough choice but Laura’s design came out as the well deserved winner and I would like to congratulate her and everyone else who took part.”
