2013 Good Egg campaign launches in Scotland

Michael McDonnell, director of Road Safety Scotland, will attend the launch of the 2013 Good Egg In-Car Child Safety campaign at IKEA Edinburgh (24 June).

The campaign, now in its 12th year, is designed to ensure that babies and children are properly restrained while travelling in the car.

More than 30 free in-car child safety clinics will run across Scotland over the next three months, giving parents and carers the opportunity to have their car seat checked by a qualified expert.

Of the 1,434 seats checked during the 2012 campaign 45% were correctly fitted, 30% had minor faults, 18% had major faults and 9% were incompatible.

The Good Egg Safety website, which lists where all the clinics will take place, also offers advice on buying a car seat and a comprehensive retailer charter. Retailers are invited to sign up to the charter and then monitored to ensure that that they ask the key questions to ensure the correct choice of car seat – including the vehicle make and model, and the child’s age and weight.

Michael McDonnell said: “This campaign not only highlights the dangers of carrying children incorrectly and the issues around choosing and fitting the correct child restraints, it also provides solutions using a variety of media.

“Not least of these are the car seat clinics, which allow parents and carers to have the child-car-seat combination checked by an expert.”
