Academy membership reaches new high in Harrogate

As a result of the Road Safety GB Academy presentation at the 2013 National Road Safety Conference in Harrogate, and its presence at the accompanying exhibition, Academy membership has reached a new high.

Representatives from The Academy who were on-hand to speak with road safety practitioners over the two days were productive in increasing individual membership. At the same time their efforts also enticed a number of local authorities to take advantage of the opportunity to ‘fast track’ block enrolment of road safety team members.

During their joint presentation on the work of The Academy, Sam Merison and Cheryl Evans, acting head and head of training respectively, introduced an element of interactivity to allow delegates to vote on issues that are critical to the The Academy’s progress.

Bill Smith, Academy head of communications, said: “The results tell us there is still much work to do, and there are many road safety professional eligible for membership who have not yet signed up.

“We would be delighted to hear from the 65 delegates who indicated they are not yet members of The Academy.”

Sam and Cheryl’s presentation also provided information on regional uptake of membership which shows that at present the Road Safety GB South East, South West, Mercia and East Midlands regions lead the way – but all still have space for more members. On the other hand, membership in Wales, Ireland and further afield is sparse.

Emma Norton, head of membership, said: “A strong and successful Academy relies heavily on the support and input from a committed membership. We look forward to reporting early in 2014 on a real milestone being reached in terms of membership.”
