Advice for Drivers with Disabilities

Breakdowns are inconvenient for any motorist but there are many more issues for drivers with mobility problems. Middlesbrough Council’s Safe & Active Travel Team and Middlesbrough‘s Shopmobility Service have teamed up to raise awareness of the issue with some simple tips which can make a big difference.

The teams are using a helpful Highways Agency magazine which contains an emergency card which can be kept in a vehicle’s glove box.  The ‘My Way’ magazine is packed with safety tips and journey planning advice, articles are written by drivers with disabilities and the charity Mobilise.  Shopmobility staff will be offering the magazine to drivers using their service, and copies will also be given to anyone undertaking the ‘Scooter Safe’ training course.

Councillor Nicky Walker, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Transport, said: “Finding yourself broken down, crashed or with a flat tyre on a major road can be a daunting prospect but for people with a disability it can be especially difficult.   “Hopefully, drivers with disabilities will find this information useful in helping them travel safely and with the confidence to be able to deal with any situation.”
