An Australian council has developed a campaign that includes a calculator to warn drivers they may still be over the blood alcohol limit the morning after a big night out.
Sandra Robinson, road safety and traffic officer, says the number of people caught driving under the influence (DUI) between 6am and 12noon has ‘increased dramatically’.
She said: “Every year I get calls from shocked drivers wanting to know why they have been charged with DUI the morning after a big night out.
“This year we are distributing brochures, posters and drink coasters as part of the ‘R U OVER IT?’ campaign.
“Every standard drink takes an hour for a healthy male, and 1.5 – 2 hours for a healthy female, to be broken down in the liver.
“Eating a meal, consuming extra water and regular alcohol consumption does not change the amount of time it takes your body to process alcohol.
“It is a real shame when people end up with a criminal record for driving the morning after a big night out, especially when they have been responsible enough not to drink and drive when they do go out.”
