Bereaved family participates in drink drive campaign

A vehicle in which a young driver lost his life after drinking a relatively modest amount of alcohol is featuring in a campaign across Warrington and Halton this summer.

The campaign – a joint initiative between Warrington and Halton’s road safety teams, Cheshire Constabulary and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service – is running throughout June 2013 to highlight the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.

The driver’s family has donated the vehicle – now known as the Think Car – to demonstrate the very real and tragic consequences of drink driving. They hope that it will prevent another family having to go through what they have, by allowing young people to see for themselves how life can change for a family at the turn of a wheel.

Their son lost control of the car on a rural A-road, colliding with a tree and killing him when he was two days short of his 21st birthday. He was found to have a blood alcohol reading of 121mg (80mg is the legal limit) and the vehicle speed at impact was estimated to be 43mph in a 60mph speed limit.

    We need more public displays like these to discourage drink/drugged/anti-social driving.

    The above photo graphically illustrates the dangers of believing that today’s vehicles are indestructible, where that photo clearly shows that they are not.
