The number of incorrectly fitted car seats identified at a recent clinic in Wokingham fell to 42%, compared with 74% a year ago.
The dramatic improvements were seen at an in-car child safety seat clinic earlier this month, organised by Wokingham Borough Council in conjunction with the Good Egg campaign and the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).
The Good Egg campaign, which is endorsed by Road Safety GB, is designed to ensure that babies and children are properly restrained while travelling in a car. Parents were given a free copy of the Good Egg guide, which provides detailed advice on the important issues relating to in-car child safety seats.
Julie Pillai, Wokingham’s road safety officer, said: “Travelling as a passenger in a car is one of the main ways that children under 11 years old get about. Most of their journeys are completed safely but unfortunately, some are not. The safest way for children to travel in cars is to use a child seat that is suitable for their weight and size.
“It’s encouraging to see the increase in the number of seats correctly fitted at this year’s checks. Nevertheless there is still room for improvement and I would urge any parents and carers to use the Good Egg Guide to In-Car Child Safety to keep their child safe when travelling in the car.”
