Bikewise comes of age

Thousands of people turned out for Durham Constabulary’s 21st Bikewise event as bike enthusiasts and families enjoyed an action-packed day – the first to be staged at the Force’s new HQ.

Bikewise was originally set up to help Durham Police better engage with motorcyclists in order to try and improve their safety. While safety is still an important element of the event, it has developed into a family day out with a motorcycling theme.

The many attractions included a Darlington-based stunt rider, Isle of Man TT legend John McGuinness, a freestyle motocross rider and a mountain bike display team. There were also displays from the Durham police dog section and the police helicopter.

Chief Constable Mike Barton said: “Bikewise has become a popular attraction not only for motorcycle enthusiasts but also for many others who just enjoy a great day out.”

Sgt Iain Rodgers, from Durham Constabulary’s bike section, said: “Bikewise has been a tremendous success over the years and has helped our efforts to improve road safety.

“However, motorcyclists remain among the most vulnerable of our road users and there are important messages to take away from the event to help keep them safe on the roads.”
