New data shows that more pupils in Brent are choosing active travel, thanks to the introduction of School Streets in the borough.
School Streets operate outside more than 30 schools across Brent. For the last year, motorists who break the restrictions have been penalised with fines.
Data for the last year shows there has been a 14% increase in the number of pupils travelling to school actively, whether by foot, bicycle or scooting.
Data at one school shows there has been a ‘huge increase of active travel’.
In 2023, Sudbury Primary School had 89% of pupils picking walking, cycling, or taking public transport – compared to 60% in 2017.
Cllr Krupa Sheth, cabinet member for environment, infrastructure, and climate action, said: “One year on these are a big success with local residents and the school community.
“Creating streets that children feel safe on, supporting active travel and healthier lifestyles, with cleaner air, and the benefit of reducing traffic congestion really is a win, win.
“This is just one of the many projects we champion so that we can reach our ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.”
