The 2009 Laurie Bunn Award for outstanding road safety achievement in London has been presented to Bromley’s road safety team for its work in developing a child car seat project.
The Award was presented by Nick Ross, LAPC (London Accident Prevention Council) president, to Val Fuller Bromley RSO, on 22 July.
The winning scheme, developed by Val Fuller and Peter Knowles, comprises a programme under which retailers are trained to give specialist advice about child car seat fitting. The programme includes an accreditation scheme with three levels – bronze, silver and gold. All stores in Bromley have been accredited, with 36 attaining bronze, 17 attaining silver and two working towards gold.
Bromley is now working with the British Standards Institute to produce a ‘publicly available specification’ on the fitment of car seats, and the project team appeared recently on Channel 5 News, demonstrating how to fit child car seats. The DfT also asked for Bromley’s help with its recent child car seat advertisement.
‘Which’ magazine said of the scheme: “To improve the chance of all children in crashes, we would like to see schemes like Bromley’s rolled out across the country.”
