An annual illustrated poem competition, jointly organised by the Road Safety Team of Capita Symonds and Heddlu Gwent Police, was once again a resounding success with 679 entries received this year.
The competition, which is organised on behalf of the Gwent Road Safety Forum, challenged pupils in schools across Gwent to write and illustrate a poem outlining the importance and correct use of seatbelts.
The winning entries were awarded cash prizes by Chief Superintendent Paul Symes at a ceremony at Newport Civic Centre during Child Safety Week (20 – 26 June).
Chief Superintendent Symes said: “The police and our partner agencies believe that taking part in competitions like this fosters a better understanding and recognition of the importance of wearing a seatbelt.
“My colleagues and I know from experience that many lives have been saved and injury severity reduced by the use of a seatbelt. I hope the young people here will pass on this message to their friends and families.”
Penny Thorpe, principal RSO with Capita Symonds, said: “There were even more poems submitted for the competition this year than last year. Yet again the standard is very high with the young people coming up with original ideas to promote the use of seatbelts.”
