The Fringe programme at the 2022 National Road Safety Conference comprises 16 presentations covering a wide range of topics.

National Conference 2022 is being held in Harrogate on 9-10 November. The event is organised by Road Safety GB and supported by National Highways, Jenoptik and Westcotec. Around 290 people have already registered to attend.

The Fringe programme runs in parallel with the Main Conference programme, with delegates free to move between the two as they wish.

There are two Fringe sessions this year – one on each day of the conference.

Topics covered in the Fringe include:

Speed
Dr Richard Stephens (Keele University) will look at the effect of speed on flow and enjoyment for driving; while Dr Suzy Charman (Road Safety Foundation) and Sam Chapman (The Floow) will explain how telematics data can be used to identify locations where speed limit compliance is poor.

Technology
Ian Edwards (New View Consultants) will examine whether ISA will work for the drivers who most need it; Frances Senior (WSP) will discuss emerging vehicle technologies and the challenges they pose for emergency services and other road users; Scott Stephenson (AECOM) will demonstrate how problem solving techniques can be used to model the highway system; Pierre Trotobas (Flowell by Colas) will present ‘active road markings’, described as a ‘new concept for road safety’; and Andy Graham (Vesos) will discuss how e-call data can be better used to enhance road safety.

Motorcycling
Heidi Duffy will provide an update on the work of the National Young Rider Forum; and Craig Carey-Clinch will present the National Motorcyclists Council’s view on the role motorcycling should play in future transport policy.

Drivers’ views on safety issues
Rebecca Ashton (IAM RoadSmart) will present the findings from the 2021 IAM Safety Culture Index.

Road safety education in schools
Iain Watson (Suffolk County Council) will present a non-teacher’s guide to planning and delivering a road safety lesson.

Young drivers
Lorna Smith will provide details of a young driver course developed and delivered by the road safety team at Kent County Council.

NDORS courses
Emily Brannen (Keele University) will examine the role of NDORS driver diversion courses in a contemporary road safety and roads policing landscape.

Traffic injury inequality
Amy Pidwell (TfL) will present data which shows that where people live, their age, ethnicity and whether they have a disability all affect their likelihood of injury as a result of a road traffic collision.

Post collision care
Matt Evans (CFG Solicitors) will explain what victims really need when it comes to post collision care.
