Campaign returns to raise awareness of HGV blind spots

13.34 | 21 January 2026 |

National Highways has launched the next phase of a campaign that demonstrates to drivers how to drive safely around heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

Large vehicles, such as trucks and HGVs, are often considerably longer, heavier, and more powerful than standard vehicles and need more consideration.

Drivers underestimate the size and position of HGVs, the areas of limited vision, as well as the stopping distance required. Because of the significant differences in weight, crashes with HGVs are more likely to cause severe injury or death.

Therefore, the Know the Zones campaign is designed to increase awareness and knowledge among road users of the limited vision areas and vehicle limitations of HGVs.

Creative assets for the campaign include videos, posters and social media resources. These can be downloaded from the campaign page, along with a stakeholder toolkit.

The resources highlight that HGVs have four zones of limited vision, sharing the key message: pass safely and don’t linger around them.

Other messages are for drivers to:

  • Stay visible
  • Overtake with care
  • Don’t tailgate

For HGV drivers, the advice is to ‘be predictable’ and make sure intentions are clear and visible to other drivers.

The National Highways campaign will be aired on radio, social media, billboards and posters – as well as at other locations and events.
