Birmingham is preparing to welcome five new Car-Free School Streets, as the initiative ‘gains momentum’ throughout the city.

The Birmingham City Council scheme – known elsewhere in the country as School Streets – involves closing roads outside of schools to motor traffic at the start and end of the school day.

The aim is to reduce congestion and improve air quality, as well as making it easier and safer to walk or cycle to school.

Birmingham introduced its first schemes in 2019 – and there are now 12 in operation.

Feedback from residents from these schemes has been ‘extremely positive’, with more than 80% wanting the scheme to continue on their road.

Birmingham City Council is now preparing to introduce five more schemes after the Easter holidays.

Cllr Waseem Zaffar, cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “The continued expansion of car-free school streets across Birmingham is particularly beneficial to children.

“I wholeheartedly support this development because it provides both immediate physical protection from motorised vehicles while also contributing to reducing pollution.

“I am delighted to see Car-Free School Streets gaining momentum throughout the city.”

The five new schemes will be located at:

  • Brownmead Academy – Shard End
  • Colmore Junior and Infant School – Kings Heath
  • Court Farm Primary School – Perry Common
  • St Dunstan’s Catholic School – Brandwood and Kings Heath
  • Nansen Primary School – Alum Rock
