A conference to be organised by PACTS in the autumn will consider the challenges of maintaining older people’s mobility safely in the years ahead.
The conference, ‘Older, Wiser, Safer: the Challenge of an Ageing Population’, will be held on 13 October at the Royal Society of Medicine.
Key speakers include Mike Penning, the road safety minister, who will deliver his presentation, ‘The Government’s Approach to Keeping Older Road Users Safe’; and the IAM’s Neil Greig, who will deliver a presentation titled, ‘Staying Safer for Longer – keeping older drivers mobile’. Robert Gifford, executive director of PACTS, will provide the closing remarks.
The conference literature says: “Over the next two decades more older drivers will hold driving licences and will continue to exercise their use of the car. Statistically, older drivers and passengers are more at risk in collisions. Yet that risk stems from their frailty, not from their responsibility for causing crashes.
“What advice is available to older drivers about car usage? Where does responsibility lie in terms of friends and family? Are there changes to the urban environment that would benefit older pedestrians and cyclists? How do we take forward the concept of the age-friendly city adopted by the World Health Organisation and much talked about in recent years?”
The conference costs £210+vat for PACTS members, and £240+vat for non members.
