The latest confirmed presentation for the 2014 National Road Safety Conference in November will review a range of resources designed to facilitate discussions with older drivers.
The presentation, delivered by David Williams MBE, chief executive of GEM, will cover the ‘Still Safe to Drive‘ older driver resources which are available for use free of charge.
David Williams joined the road safety profession in 1972 in a career which included roles with the London Borough of Barking and Suffolk County Council, and a three-year stint as chairman of IRSO (now Road Safety GB Academy).
In 1987 David joined the then Guild of Experienced Motorists as its road safety adviser before being awarded MBE in 1998 and becoming chief executive of GEM in the same year.
In 2013 GEM Road Safety Charity funded a series of three videos aimed at the problem of ‘older drivers’. The ‘Still Safe to Drive’ videos are freely available to RSOs and others involved in such education, including individual family members. A wide range of specialists were consulted in the making of the films and the content is sympathetically delivered by TV personality Valerie Singleton who is herself in her mid-70s and remains an enthusiastic and competent driver.
In his presentation, David Williams will invite delegates to review the videos and then answer any questions on their content and use.
