Dr Will Murray, the former research director of eDriving FLEET who passed away suddenly last year, has seen his dedication to road safety recognised by the road safety charity Brake.

Dr Murray, an expert in commercial road risk management, was named posthumously as the winner of the Kevin Storey Award for Outstanding Commitment to Road Safety at Brake’s 2017 Fleet Safety Awards ceremony on 28 September.

The annual Fleet Safety Awards recognise individuals and organisations for their contribution to improving the safety of at-work drivers. The 2017 awards ceremony was attended by almost 400 guests, making it the biggest to date.

The Kevin Storey Award was presented by Mary Williams OBE, Brake chief executive – who founded the charity in 1995 with the help of Dr Murray – and was accepted by his wife Marie, sons Sam and Joe and sister Janet.

Throughout his accomplished career as an international occupational road safety expert, Will Murray was motivated by a relentless passion for helping clients measure and maximise the impact of their safety programs.

He was a Visiting Fellow at universities in both the UK and Australia, as well as a long time Trustee of Brake. He worked extensively with BT to achieve significant and sustained collision and cost reductions and was also the ‘road safety doctor’ for One More Second – an interactive road safety magazine launched in 2016.

Ed Dubens, executive vice president of eDriving FLEET, said: “Everyone who came in contact with Will always enjoyed every minute they spent with him. His charisma and congeniality were unrivalled and his passion for our industry and saving lives was palpable in every conversation.

“As research director of Interactive Driving Systems and subsequently eDriving FLEET, Will was not just committed to results and efficacy, but driven by a need to demonstrate outcome.

“His dedication resulted in over 70 client and partner awards recognising the great results achieved with Virtual Risk Manager (VRM) at the respective companies and organisations. Nothing made him more proud than to help clients attain the recognition they deserved for the lives and costs they saved.”

Other 2017 Fleet Safety Awards winners included: Johnson & Johnson (Global Road Safety Award); Morrison Utility Services (Safe Vehicles Award); and Rory Morgan of Iron Mountain who was named Road Risk Manager of the Year. Gateshead Council picked up the Eco Fleet Award.

A new award introduced in Will’s memory – the Dr Will Murray Award for Action and Analysis in 2017 – was presented to FM Conway Ltd.
