Road safety teams across Berkshire are working together to draw attention to the risk of drink driving during the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament which starts later this week.
A series of ‘Blazed and Wasted’ events will be held Wokingham, Slough, Newbury, Bracknell and Maidenhead to coincide with UK Road Safety Week 2014 (9-13 June). Non-alcoholic drinks will be served at the events, there will be a ‘World Cup Shots’ football competition and a new film about the risks of drink and drug driving. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service will also demonstrate the process of rescuing someone from a crashed car at some of the events.
Dan Campsall, communications director for Safer Roads, Berkshire said: “Driving under the influence of drink or drugs results in over 100 crashes a year in Berkshire. It is also an issue which disproportionately affects younger drivers.
“Many motorists are not aware of how long alcohol takes to leave your system. If you have a late night enjoying a few drinks you may well still be over the legal limit in the morning and unaware of the risks you are taking.”
The campaign also includes a smartphone app that helps to count units and estimate the time taken to process the alcohol, which is available for download from the campaign website.
Links to the app and other information about the campaign can be found on the campaign website.
Traditionally, drink drive campaigns are run around Christmas, but the data actually shows that its just as much of an issue in other months of the year. The World Cup provides a great opportunity to help push our message.

The World Cup has provided a great opportunity to raise the profile of the dangers of drink & drug driving. We have also revived the DES system and a themed World Cup Mocktails menu in partnership with our local pubwatch group. The project is a great example of partnership working and collaboration with a range of road safety professionals.

Drink driving in summer? Not just the same old rubbish you see everywhere, it’s good.
