Driver education software developed by a2om® is currently available free of charge to schools – and students who complete the course can upgrade to the world’s first novice driver education programme.
a2om® developed the software around a research programme conducted in 2006 which looked at the effectiveness of cognitive skills training to enhance executive functioning of the brain in young drivers.
The results clearly indicated that training in higher level driving skills improves driving behaviour including visual search, speed choice and directional control. An improvement in the development of safe attitudes was also found.
The a2om® software comprises two products: ‘a2om® mind’, an evidence-based ‘brain’ training product; and ‘a2om highway’, which contains more than 15 modules designed to challenge attitudes and behaviour.
The software featured in a keynote presentation by Dr Lisa Dorn at the 2009 Road Safety GB conference in November 2009.
Students who complete the e-learning course can then upgrade to a BTEC in Driving Science when they learn to drive.
The BTEC is an intermediate vocational training qualification (equivalent to a GCSE) and the world’s first novice driver education programme. The course follows a highly structured learning programme (inclusive of post-test elements such as motorway driving and driving at night) and works in conjunction with normal practical driving lessons.

I am interested in obtaining a copy of the Driver Education software, is that possible?

The DSA are currently setting up their approval process and it will be ready in the New Year. As soon as it is, the a2om BTEC in Driving Science will be submitted for approval.

I have had a few e-mails and more recently a letter about this scheme. Does anyone know if it is DSA approved? I understand the scheme is approved by Edexcel as a BTEC in Driving Science.
