EC consults on professional driver training

Road safety professionals in the UK are being encouraged to participate in a current European Commission consultation on the training of professional drivers.

The plea for participation comes from Dr Will Murray, research director at Interactive Driving Systems, through his organisation’s involvement with the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC).

Dr Murray says: “The consultation is part of a process of assessing the implementation of Directive 2003/59/EC on the compulsory initial qualification and periodic training for professional drivers.

“The EC’s online questionnaire asks whether the Directive has met its objectives and what specific action and measures may need to be adopted to improve its effectiveness.

“In particular, the consultation addresses the issue of mutual recognition of professional drivers’ training, notably the certificate of professional competence (CPC).

“The aim is also to identify new common requirements by analysing the different existing structures.

“The questionnaire is extensive but participants do not have to contribute to every part of it.”
