Hackney launches cycle loan scheme

Hackney Council has launched a new scheme under which residents can borrow a bike in order to experience cycling for a month for a payment of £10.

The innovative scheme is being launched with the help of the cycle training organisation, Cycle Experience.

At the end of the four-week loan period, people have the option of buying the bike at a discounted price which can be paid off in three instalments over six months.

As well as a bike, residents can also borrow a helmet, lock, lights, child seat and other accessories at no extra cost. Folding bikes are also available which can be taken on public transport for part of the journey.

Trainers from Cycle Experience, which is running the Hackney Cycle Loan Scheme on behalf of Hackney Borough Council, are also available to provide free cycle lessons.

Nick Moon, of Cycle Experience, said: “The loan scheme provides a fantastic opportunity to give cycling a go without having to invest in a bike and equipment up front. 

“Free cycle training is also provided, there’s route planning and cycle security advice, hints and tips on what to wear and how to carry your gear.”

Councillor Feryal Demirci, Hackney Council, said: “Hackney is London’s Cycling Borough and we’re determined to get more people than ever in the saddle and enjoying all the health and economic benefits cycling brings. This is the perfect opportunity for people to try cycling before buying the bike.”
