Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) from schools in County Durham spent last week packing bags to give to teachers from their 12 partner schools in Botswana and Tanzania when they visit in June 2015.

The JRSOs were preparing bags containing road safety teaching resources, pens, pencils and JRSO resources as part of Global Road Safety Week 2015 (4-10 May).

Paul Watson, Durham’s road safety manager, visited Copeland Road Primary School in West Auckland to assist with the bag packing, and to talk about the different road safety issues faced by the pupils in African countries.

Paul Watson said: “We are delighted to be able to share our road safety resources with teachers from Botswana and Tanzania. By providing the JRSO packs we hope to encourage them to set up the scheme in their own schools.

“This event for Global Road Safety Week has provided a wonderful opportunity for our JRSOs to come together and gain an understanding of how the scheme not only contributes to road safety education in County Durham, but nationally and internationally too.”

Durham’s road safety team also donated high-visibility vests to Recyke Y’Bike (CORR), a social enterprise and charity that sends bicycles and cycle equipment to African countries.
