Three local authorities were among the organisations recognised for ‘making a real difference to transport across the UK’ at the 2017 National Transport Awards.
Essex County Council (pictured above) won the top award on the night, ‘Transport Local Authority of the Year’, while Salford City Council and Wirral Council received the ‘Excellence in Cycling and Walking’ and ‘Road Safety, Traffic Management & Enforcement’ awards respectively.
Cllr Kevin Bentley, deputy leader at Essex County Council, described his council’s award as ‘well-deserved recognition of the work that often goes unseen by the public’.
Held in London on 12 October, the National Transport Awards celebrate the successes of both national and local transport projects. The event featured a keynote address from transport secretary Chris Grayling, who praised the innovation demonstrated by the award-winning schemes.
Essex County Council was named Transport Local Authority of the Year, with judges praising the range of road safety, major infrastructure and maintenance projects the council has achieved through partnership working.
Cllr Kevin Bentley said: “This award is a well-deserved recognition of the work that often goes unseen by the public, but is crucial to ensuring our roads and transport infrastructure can support the growing number of businesses, jobs and housing available in Essex.
“Our teams work tirelessly with partners to keep Essex moving and to secure the funding that allows us to build roads and infrastructure for the future.
“This award is a sign our innovative approach to deliver a first class transportation system for Essex is working.”
Salford City Council was presented with the Excellence in Cycling and Walking award in recognition of its traffic-free routes, which feature key design principles including shared use for cyclists and pedestrians, and accessibility for all – including those using pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
Wirral Council (pictured below) was also recognised, with its Mind Your Business (MYB) campaign picking up the Road Safety, Traffic Management & Enforcement award.

The MYB project has actively engaged with more than 80 businesses and organisations within Wirral – including Royal Mail, the NHS, Asda, Biffa and Unilever – to promote road safety at work.
MYB will be the subject of a presentation at the 2017 National Road Safety Conference, with Paul Leatherbarrow, Wirral’s road safety officer, presenting the scheme as part of the Fringe programme.
